Guide for purchasing dog collars;

Buying a collar which is comfortable and will fit your dog properly is important.  I find that leather collars are not only much stronger and longer wearing, but kinder to a dog's neck than nylon or other synthetics.  Leather, being a natural, living, breathing material doesn't cause irritated skin or chafing.  The most important thing for me (and for you also to consider!) is the kind of breed you have.  Having 2 huskies and a beagle, I need very strong collars that won't break!  I used a nylon collar for my first dog when she was a pup, and it not only caused hair loss and red angry skin around her neck, but it snapped one day!  Luckily we were walking on a quiet country road and I was able to pick her up and carry her home.  From that moment on, I decided never to use cheap collars again! No more light weight collars!

A general guideline then to measure your dog for his/her new collar is to measure the circumference of your dog's neck and then add 1" or 1 1/2" to that measurement. You now have the correct size to order! To check for a proper fit, place two  fingers between puppy dog's neck and collar.  There should be no more than the width of your two fingers between neck and collar. If there is, then the collar may easily slip over your dogs ears. If you can pull the collar over the dogs ears, than he/she can easily back up and squirm out of the collar when you are out walking. So please ensure you use a cloth tape measure to get an accurate size.

Also, if you have a dog who likes to swim, try not to let the collar get too wet, since it will stretch over time and become loose, so if possible, take the collar off before letting them jump in the water. If the collar does end up getting soaked and muddy, wash the mud of gently and then let the leather dry naturally, do not use any direct heat since this will dry out the leather.  Use saddle soap to clean the leather now and then, and to keep your leather in great shape, rub some neatsfoot oil it into the leather.
